A quick and easy way to extend the life of your furnace, reduce energy bills, and improve indoor air quality is to change your air filter on a regular basis.
Energy Star recommends changing your air filter monthly, especially during the heating and cooling seasons, when your HVAC unit gets the most use. At a minimum change your air filter every 3 months because a dirty filter can lead to extra repairs, service, or even cause your system to fail early.
If this is your first time doing it, no sweat, our experts are here to tell you how!
Step 1
Know what kind and size filter you have. Start by turning off the furnace. Remove the existing filter, which is located inside the furnace or the blower compartment. There may be an easy slide-off or pop-off plate covering it. Slide out the filter. Most filters display the size in inches printed around the cardboard frame. If it does not, measure the filter. We recommend keeping a few filters on hand just so you have one available when you need it.
Step 2
Get the correct replacement. Furnace filters can be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores, online, or even through an HVAC company. Selecting the right filter for your system is crucial. Furnace filters remove dust, dirt, pollen, allergens, bacteria, and other air pollutants from your home’s air. We recommend checking with the manufacturer of your system or an HVAC professional to make sure you are purchasing the correct filter for your system.
Step 3
Install the new filter. Look at the markings or arrows on the filter. They will show you which way to slide the filter in. Next, slide the filter into place. The filter should fit snuggly into your furnace to prevent air from slipping around the edges. Remember to put back any plate or cover on the system that goes over the filter. Make note of the date you changed the filter so you’ll know when it is time to change it again.
This simple task will help you get the most from your system.
