When to repair or replace
The decision to repair or replace heating equipment depends on many factors, including the age of the system, the cost of repair, and how much money a more efficient system may save you.
So, how do you know when it's not worth fixing?
We will provide the information you need to make an informed decision about whether to repair or replace.
When to Repair
- The problem is covered. The system is still under a manufacturer’s warranty or service contract that covers the failed part and/or labor.
- It’s less than 11 years old. If the system still has several years left in it.
- Repair Costs are reasonable. Multiply the age of the system by how much it will cost to repair. If the number is smaller than $5,000, it is worth repairing.
- Energy-efficiency. A major sign that your system is not operating efficiently is an increase in your energy bill. Another sign is if your home never seems to be at a comfortable temperature, no matter how many times you adjust the thermostat. If you are not facing either of these problems, your system is most likely operating efficiently.
When to replace
- Age of the equipment. If the age of the system has surpassed its average life expectancy and the repair will not extend the life of the system.
- High repair costs. A good rule of thumb for deciding whether to repair or replace is to multiply the equipment’s age by its repair cost. If the number is more than $5,000, then you should consider replacement.
- Frequency of repairs. If the system has been unreliable and undergone numerous repairs, then replacing it may be your best option.
- Improvement of energy efficiency. New models have improved energy efficiency ratings. Compare the annual energy savings of new models with your current system. The money you save may help you pay for your new system over a short period of time
