Do you have trouble falling to sleep? Do you toss and turn throughout the night? Do you wake up feeling exhausted?
Well, you aren’t alone. In fact, 1 in 3 adults doesn’t get enough sleep on a regular basis.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society say that an adult needs at least 7 hours of sleep a night to promote optimal health and well-being. Sleeping less than 7 hours increases your risk of developing chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stress.
There are many reasons that may contribute to your lack of sleep, but before you turn to herbal teas or over the counter sleeping medications, check your thermostat. Yes, that’s right! Check your thermostat.
Perhaps you are trying to be money conscious by keeping your thermostat high in the summer and low in the winter, but what you didn’t know is that your thermostat may make or break your slumber.
As you lay in bed trying to fall asleep, your body temperature decreases to initiate sleep. Having the thermostat set to the right temperature can help facilitate sleep. If your room is cool, it will be much easier to fall and stay asleep. If the temperature in your bedroom is more or less than the recommended temperatures, it could lead to restlessness and decrease the quality of your sleep.
The suggested bedroom temperature for optimal sleep is between 60 and 67 degrees.
Although there may be many reasons you aren’t sleeping well at night, we recommend adjusting the temperature at night. It may take a few days of trial and error before you find your perfect sleeping temperature.
