If you are the site manager, the building operations manager, or the head of the IT department for a business, then you already understand the importance of keeping the interior temperature of any data centers low. You may not realize the importance of monitoring the humidity levels for these computer and server rooms. Here are some helpful tips to keep your computer systems safe from the people in the know at Burkholder's Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. in Emmaus.
High Humidity and Computers
Elevated moisture in the air is damaging to computers and servers. The excess moisture can build-up in the housings of the systems and cause electrical shorts or directly impact the components and cause them to malfunction. Humidity is measured as a relative or absolute reading. The relative humidity is the ratio of water vapor at a given temperature. Still, this indicator has a different meaning for warmer air versus cooler air because warmer air can hold more water than cold air.
A data center will have warm exhaust emitting from the computers and cold air coming in from the air conditioning system. To avoid confusion in interpreting humidity readings, an absolute humidity level of the dewpoint can be used, which is the same for all temperatures. You can monitor the humidity at either the cooling air input or by the exhaust outlet area.
