When your HVAC system breaks down and you are faced with a costly repair, is it better to repair or replace it?
This is a common question that depends on a few factors.
You may have seen recent news about the tripling costs of R-22 (Freon), a refrigerant that’s being phased out due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer. If you have a leaky central air conditioning system, the next R-22 refill could be costly. New systems use R410-A refrigerant, an eco-friendly R-22 alternative. Unfortunately, R410-A isn’t compatible with older units, so you’ll need to replace your HVAC system to switch refrigerant.
There are several other benefits to replacing an old HVAC system:
- Substantial cost savings. Upgrading may save 20 to 40 percent on energy costs. Combine that with tax credits and rebates, and replacement is attractive.
- Comfort, efficiency, and air quality. New HVAC systems offer advanced programming options. They also improve temperature and humidity control, keep air healthier, and use 1/3 less fuel.
- Dependable warranties. Today’s HVAC equipment comes with superior warranties that cover many repairs and offer peace of mind. Today’s HVAC equipment comes with superior warranties that cover many repairs and offer peace of mind.
HVAC repair is the best option when:
- Your system is under a manufacturer’s warranty or service contract covering the failed part and/or labor.
- Your system is less than 11 years old.
- Repairs cost less than 25% of a new system.
- Your system is still performing efficiently and keeping you comfortable.
