Holiday Safety Tips

The holiday season is always a magical time of year. The ambience of Christmas lights and decorations, sentimental holiday movies with happy endings, holiday parties, and children anxiously waiting to open their gifts.

Unfortunately, thefts, burglaries and property crimes greatly increase between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. During this time of year make sure you take some extra precautions to keep you and your family safe.

Here are a few holiday safety tips to follow:

While shopping:

  • Shop during the day if possible. Otherwise, park in a well-lit area.
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • Keep cash in your front pants pocket.
  • Do not leave packages and other valuables on the seat of your car. Lock it inside your truck or hide it under the seat.
  • Keep your purse and packages secure.
  • If a stranger approaches you, beware. Con-artists may try methods of distracting you to take your money or valuables.

Children:

  • If possible, leave small children home with a babysitter or family member.
  • Teach children to stick around you at all times while shopping.
  • Make sure your child knows to go to a store clerk for help if he or she gets separated from you.
  • Never allow your child to go alone to the bathroom or leave them alone in a car.

At Home:

  • If using lights on your Christmas tree, ensure the wiring is not frayed or damaged. It could cause a fire.
  • Make sure your Christmas tree is properly mounted so children or pets cannot easily knock it over.
  • Put indoor and outdoor lights on a timer, so they automatically switch on if you are not home.
  • Double check that all windows and doors are locked.

Hosting A Party:

  • Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests.
  • Arrange alternative transportation or a designated driver for intoxicated guests.

Attending a Party:

  • Know your limit. If you are driving, the safest policy is to not drink alcoholic beverages at all prior to driving.

Of course you should following many of these safety tips throughout the year not just over the holiday season.
