Duct Sealing & Cleaning

Ducts, and other components of your HVAC system, get dirty like everything else, and indoor air quality can be significantly affected.  Pets, smoke, and water damage increase the need for frequent cleaning, but everyone is susceptible to regular dirt and dust build up. I know most of you don’t abide by the “change your filters every two months” rule which makes it even more important to have your system checked every year or two by a professional.

And while we’re on the topic of ducts, it’s important to remember that sealing is just as important as cleaning. In the average home, it’s approximated that about 20 percent of AC or heat that runs through a duct system is lost to holes or leaks. That’s a lot of energy and money to lose.

The majority of duct systems are often tucked away in hard-to-reach places like walls and ceilings, but sealing the accessible portions can make a surprisingly big difference in efficiency.  Reachable parts of your ductwork, like that in the attic or basement can be patched up with mastic or foil tape and then a layer of insulation. For you do-it-yourselfers, regular duct tape that you keep to fix anything in an emergency just won’t do the trick for sealing ductwork. Having a service technician seal your ductwork can really make a noticeable difference on both your wallet and your comfort.

A dirty or leaky system can make it difficult to get the desired temperature in your home or office – no matter how high or low the thermostat is set. Checking to make sure connections at vents are well-sealed is a good start, but here at Burkholder’s HVAC we’re happy to help you inspect, evaluate, and repair or replace your duct system.
